How to Break the Bead on an ATV Tire

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

If you’re in need of changing or repairing your ATV, UTV or Side x Side tire but have never broken a bead before, we can help!

If you happen to have a bead breaker you can follow these steps:

1. Remove the wheel from the ATV: This can be done by lifting the ATV off the ground using a jack or stand and loosening the lug nuts holding the wheel in place.

2. Deflate the tire: Use a valve stem tool to remove the valve core and deflate the tire completely. This will help to break the seal between the tire and the rim.

3. Apply lubricant: Apply a generous amount of tire lubricant around the tire bead where it contacts the rim. This will help to loosen the seal and make it easier to break the bead.

4. Use a bead breaker tool: This tool is specifically designed to break the bead on tires. Place the tool against the sidewall of the tire and press down on the handle to break the seal between the tire and rim. You may need to use a hammer to tap the tool into place.

5. Repeat the process: Move the bead breaker tool around the tire, repeating the process until the bead is completely broken. Make sure to apply lubricant each time you move the tool.

6. Remove the tire: Once the bead is broken, you should be able to remove the tire from the rim using a tire lever or pry bar.

It is essential to be careful when breaking the bead to avoid damaging the tire or the rim.

If you’re like most people and do not have a bead breaker….

Breaking the bead on an ATV tire can be challenging if you don't have the right tools. However, there are a few methods you can try to remove the tire from the rim. Here are some techniques to consider:

  • Use a pry bar or tire iron: Insert the pry bar or tire iron between the tire and the rim, then apply leverage to push the tire away from the rim. This should break the seal between the tire and the rim.

  • Use a hammer: If you don't have a pry bar or tire iron, you can try hitting the tire with a hammer around the rim's edge. The impact should help break the seal.

  • Use a ratchet strap: Place a ratchet strap around the circumference of the tire and tighten it as much as possible. This will help compress the tire and break the seal.

  • Use a vehicle: You can use a vehicle's weight to break the bead. Park the vehicle on the tire, making sure to position it in such a way that the tire is sandwiched between the ground and the vehicle's weight. Slowly drive the vehicle forward or backward to break the seal.

  • Use soap and water: Mix soap and water and apply it around the bead's edge. The soap lubricates the tire and makes it easier to break the seal.

Note: Always exercise caution when using these methods. Breaking the bead can be dangerous, so wear protective gear and use proper tools. If you are unsure about your ability to break the bead, seek the help of a professional ATV mechanic.
